What is Transformative Teaching and Learning?

Georgia Tech aims to engage all students in meaningful experiential learning both within and outside of the classroom. The Transformative Teaching and Learning (TTL) Initiative is a network of campus resources mobilized to create and scale high-impact learning experiences.

High-Impact Practices are Transformative Learning

Decades of research point to the effectiveness of High-Impact Practices (HIPs) that transform students’ lives. The AAC&U identifies 11 high-impact practices that offer significant educational benefit for students.

Experiential Learning is in our DNA

At Georgia Tech, experiential learning and engagement in HIPs have been signature components of the undergraduate experience since our founding. Students have access to abundant hands-on learning opportunities, such as research, internships, study abroad, community-based learning, and more.

62% of first year students complete at least one HIP

92% of seniors complete at least on HIP

Innovation in the Classroom

Innovation in teaching is a key goal of the Transformative Teaching and Learning initiative. The classroom is our biggest opportunity to transform learning for all students. The TTL initiative partners with instructors to bring experiential learning and high-impact practices into classroom teaching.

450+ faculty have participated in a TTL event

3,000+ students have enrolled in a TTL course

$330k has been distributed to 19 Schools to support TTL projects

International Education

“I studied abroad in Germany as part of the Berlin Summer Program and I spent a lot of weekends touring different smaller cities in Germany. I really enjoy traveling, reading, and discovering new foods!” Katy Chen, Computer Science

Internships & Co‑ops

“I am thankful for my internship experience and the opportunities I was given there to push myself and demonstrate my growth. When I graduate in May, I will certainly be ready for what’s next.” Alexander Lomis, Aerospace Engineering

Undergraduate Research

“My favorite aspect of undergraduate research is collaborating with a bright group of people with whom I share a unique goal. I really enjoy learning new concepts with my classmates in our various courses, but what makes research so interesting is the fact that there are no right answers…” Austin Shoemaker, Chemistry

Undergraduate Transition Seminars

“While Georgia Tech already felt close-knit, taking GT 1000 made it feel even more approachable because it offers ways to truly engage with the Georgia Tech community.” Kelly Sokolowski, Management

Community-Based Learning

“The community-based learning projects helped me apply what I was learning in class to a real-world setting that would also apply to my future career. I am grateful for the opportunity to be trusted with real work that strengthened my understanding of the material and allowed me to make a meaningful impact in the community.” Christina Sweeney, Literature, Media & Communication

AI and art collide in this engineering course that puts human creativity first

In this course, we reject the illusion that machines fully master everything and put student expression first. In doing so, we value uncertainty, mistakes and imperfection as essential to the creative process.

More than Study Abroad: It’s a Leadership Lab

The Leadership for Social Good program is more than a study abroad—it’s a leadership lab for global changemakers, where Georgia Tech students work alongside Hungarian nonprofits to co-create real-world solutions to pressing social challenges.

We will provide all students with transformative learning experiences to grow as creative, ethical, globally aware, technologically sophisticated leaders who can define and solve problems to improve the human condition.
